Feature Description

Our features:
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature was established in the 2004 academic year of the Republic of China. This department is literature-oriented and aims to cultivate cultural talents with solid English skills and Western literary accomplishments. This is also part of Tzu Chi’s talent cultivation and is conducive to the expansion of Tzu Chi’s mission. In addition to engaging in cultural work, graduates are also qualified for various English-related industries. Therefore, this department attaches special importance to the positive effects and cultivation of students’ learning.

However, the cultivation of foreign language talents in Taiwan has been mainly in English for a long time. With the trend of globalization and transnational operation of enterprises, the demand for second foreign language talents other than English has gradually increased. This department cooperates with the government’s macro-policy to develop second foreign language talents and has been approved by the Ministry of Education. It was approved to change its name to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature starting from the 2023 academic year, adding Spanish language and culture courses, expanding and deepening cross-language cultural literacy, and increase students’ international competitiveness. Spanish is the official language of 21 countries across three continents: Europe, the United States, and Africa, and is the second largest international communication language in the world. The first native language spoken by more than 500 million people, and the second most spoken language in the United States, Brazil and other countries.

This department has a low student-teacher ratio and small class teaching, which helps teachers understand students’ learning conditions and improve learning effectiveness, ensuring that students get the most adequate learning opportunities. In addition to a variety of compulsory and elective subjects, senior students must work in groups to produce special research reports to demonstrate their ability to discuss and defend.

Our school particularly emphasizes the spirit of service and dedication. Teachers often have the opportunity to provide academic services outside the school, so as not to fall behind others; students have a certain number of service hours in the school’s compulsory subjects. In addition, there are many volunteers who serve within the country and abroad, training and cultivating a spirit of service. This department attaches great importance to teaching students in accordance with their aptitude and provides appropriate course planning for students with different levels. In addition to the 32 credits of core courses, the department’s elective courses include “Spanish Language Group: Spanish Conversation, Spanish Culture”, “English/Spanish Teaching”, “Business Application/Spanish Language Application” and “Multimedia Cultural English/Spanish Language Application” courses, students consider their own planning and development and can choose to take cross-field courses such as “International Marketing Micro Course”, “Chinese Teaching Course” or “Secondary School English Language Specialty Teacher Training Course”.

Students whose English proficiency has passed the intermediate and advanced level of the National English Examination before admission can be exempted from taking the first-year basic courses and directly take second-year and above courses: students whose English scores do not reach the intermediate level of the National English Examination will be implemented to enhance their abilities, so that all students have sufficient competitiveness for further study or employment when they graduate.
