To broaden the international perspectives and strengthen the cross-cultural communication skills of faculty members and students, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Tzu Chi University held an \u201cInternational Etiquette Lecture\u201d on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 2E103. The event attracted 30 participants and featured Professor Keeny Kuo, President of the Asian Economic News Agency, as the guest speaker.<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor Kuo has extensive experience in international affairs and diplomatic protocol. He has served as a special lecturer on international affairs for senior government officials of the Executive Yuan, a special lecturer on international etiquette and diplomatic reception at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\u2019 Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs, a guest lecturer at the National Academy of Civil Service, and a special lecturer at the Taipei City Civil Service Training Center. Drawing on his rich professional experience in international reception and cross-cultural communication, Professor Kuo shared practical knowledge and insights to help participants develop confidence and professionalism in international settings. The lecture focused primarily on greeting etiquette and dining etiquette in global social and professional environments.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lecture was conducted mainly in English, supplemented by Chinese explanations when necessary. Professor Kuo introduced various types of alcoholic beverages commonly encountered in international social settings and explained their cultural significance. He also provided a detailed overview of the different types of glasses, tableware, and place settings used at formal dining events. Through real-life examples and simulated scenarios, he highlighted cultural differences in etiquette and demonstrated appropriate behaviors in international contexts. Participants were invited to practice greetings, social interactions, and self-introductions commonly used in global settings, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and strengthen their understanding through active participation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the session, participants enthusiastically engaged in discussions and raised thoughtful questions. One attendee, for example, asked about the proper placement of chopsticks in East Asian dining culture. In response, Professor Kuo further explained the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western dining etiquette, as well as important details to consider during formal international banquets. These discussions helped participants gain a deeper understanding of cross-cultural dining practices and etiquette.<\/span><\/p>\n

The atmosphere was lively and interactive, with faculty members and students actively responding to the speaker\u2019s questions and contributing to discussions. Many participants commented that the lecture content was highly practical and relevant, offering valuable guidance not only for future international exchange activities but also for everyday social and professional situations. According to the post-event feedback survey, participants noted that \u201cthe lecture content was extremely useful and the English explanations were clear,\u201d and \u201cthank you, Professor Kuo, for such an informative and engaging presentation.\u201d Some attendees also suggested adjusting the schedule in future events and incorporating even more interactive activities and hands-on practice opportunities to further enhance the learning experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature emphasized that, as globalization continues to deepen, international etiquette has become an essential competency for modern citizens and professionals. The department plans to continue organizing similar lectures and international exchange activities in the future, providing diverse learning opportunities that help cultivate cross-cultural communication skills, strengthen global competitiveness, and expand participants\u2019 international outlook.<\/span><\/p>\n
